The largest, oldest and best-preserved Buddhist temple in Tianjin, Dabeiyuan dates back to the late Ming dynasty and is split into a 17th-century West Temple and a 1940s East Temple. Refreshingly uncommercial, it charges only a token entry fee and offers a serene atmosphere of incense, chanting and quiet courtyards. It is also the only monastery in the city to serve vegetarian food to the public.
