Kemeralti is a sprawling 17th-century covered market with thousands of shops, artisan workshops, hidden caravanserais, mosques, churches and synagogues stretching from Konak toward the ancient Agora. Wandering its lanes, browsing spices, copperware, textiles and jewelry, and ducking into a centuries-old han for tea costs nothing and is one of the great free experiences in Turkey. It is on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.
