Al-Kadhimiya Shrine & Market

One of the most revered Shia sites in Iraq, the Al-Kadhimiya (Al-Kazimiyya) shrine holds the tombs of the seventh and ninth Imams beneath two golden domes and four gold minarets covered in thousands of gold-coated bricks. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome to admire the dazzling architecture, and the surrounding old quarter has a vibrant market of sweets, spices, and handicrafts. Entry is free.
